Great, low-profile UPS [Posted on 2008-05-14] I bought this BR800BLK to provide battery backup and surge protection for my new Samsung DLP HDTV, also purchased here at Amazon.com.
I have my DLP TV, dual tuner DVR cable box, DVD player and recorder, VCR, and Playstation 2 all connected to this UPS. Under normal load (approx 120W), this UPS provides around 18min runtime. That's great.
While I do not have any PC attached to this UPS, I did use the free PowerChute Personal Edition software to make a few one-time adjustments to this UPS' operation. I commanded the UPS to use a tight voltage regulation scheme with high sensitivity to line distortion, and also silenced the UPS for normal on-batt signaling. The built-in LEDs are in plain view anyways, so I don't need to hear when it's kicking in to provide perfect power to my new HDTV.
What a great little UPS! 3 year warranty is nice to have as well.
APC delivers [Posted on 2008-05-28] This back up system shows that APC is still the leader in computer power backup. Not only is it easy to setup, features like variable upper and lower voltage thresholds and surge protection make it a useful tool.
Equipment Protection Policy is a SHAM! [Posted on 2008-07-16] Just know going in - if your equipment gets fried, they won't pay you a dime. They will blame it on anything from faulty building wiring to bad grounding and deny your claim. Why don't they just print '$500,000,000,000 WARRANTY' on the box - if they don't intend to stand behind their product? I had one computer system that was wireless and it's only link to electricity was through an APC battery. Lightning struck and it died and started to smell burnt. I sent in the claim and the unit & got what looks like their standard protocol - sorry, no replacement. The system was only worth $200 which is far less than our company spends annually on batteries. I won't use APC again.
Not sexy, but does the job! [Posted on 2008-07-26] Having a UPS is like having a spare tire in your care - you ususally don't think about it until you need it. I've had one of these for two years and so far it's worked perfectly. I recently bought one for my wife's computer and so far it's working perfectly. We haven't experienced any blackouts, but we do get irregular voltage. I recommend plugging the UPS into a good surge protector. The APC UPS has a surge protector built into it, but surge protectors degrade with repeated surges, so why no wear out a $30 surge protector and save the UPS? I highly recommend American Power Conversion UPS's and this BR800BLK model has been great.
great so far [Posted on 2008-07-31] I'm very pleased with how small this unit is for the capacity. I've worked with a number of other units that have been larger and frankly too ugly to be sitting out in an office, this unit is right at home deskside. I think that there's a lot of functionality here for the money.
I'll want to dig deeper into the unit and see if there are any diagnostics. A UPS with a weak battery is a time bomb, so it's good to stay on top of battery health.
