Step by Step [Posted on 2008-09-15] This book has step-by-step instructions along with pictures that show you what you should be seeing on your screen. Very helpful for someone who hasn't touched Adobe before. If you have, then some of the instructions may seem obvious, but it's very complete.
Beginner Computer Class [Posted on 2008-09-23] I am a Senior at Shippensburg University, PA enrolled in a beginner computer course, Computer 1 Design. I have only ever used one other computer program walkthrough book ever in my life which was Word Perfect back in 9th grade. This book (much easier to read and more detailed) has helped me greatly so far with Adobe Indesign. I had absolutely no idea how to use the program as it was new to me. After about two weeks or so going through each of the chapters, I've become familiarized with Indesign CS3 and am able to create and do things I never thought was possible. I'm able to create documents from scratch and have them look extremely professional. If you're new to computers or want to upgrade, I highly recommend this book. However when I said I went through the book in two weeks, I was forced as a requirement for the first assignment (completing the book was assignment 1). I do recommend taking a slower pace. Perhaps a lesson or two every few days. There is about 14 in all (00-13). Included in the back of the book is a CD that you have to upload onto your computer and then save the lessons in new folder. I hope this helps, coming from someone who is new to computer programs such as this one.
Dumbed down advice [Posted on 2008-10-24] This book is good, but it's dumbed down (and drawn out) when it comes to explaining how to use InDesign CS3. It's smaller and easier for the beginner to follow than Real World InDesign CS3, but the later is a far superior book. If you can only afford 1 InDesign book, get Real World InDesign.
Good reference [Posted on 2008-11-10] Classroom in a Book is an excellent reference, especially for those who are more advanced with the program.
Adobe InDesign Classroom CS3 [Posted on 2008-12-27] The book by is geared for the novice user, introducing the student to Adobe InDesign. The chapters are clearly written and illustrated, however each new chapter plays on the previous lessons, so unless you have prior knowledge of InDesign or more then a passing familiarity with Adobe theres no skipping about. As with all Adobe programs of this nature, theres plenty more to learn, takes years of trial and error I imagine, but this book is a good start. My take on this or any Adobe program,be prepared to spend many happy, albeit frustrating hours creating your first masterpiece.Patience is key,but a good instructor is priceless..don't leave home without one...
