nice but heavy [Posted on 2008-09-10] Very nice tripod but it is heavy. It is also quite long and won't fit on a backpack. Other than that it is fine for doing macro shots of flowers right on the ground.
A huge step up from el-cheapo compact camera tripod [Posted on 2008-09-26] I picked this tripod over the 190 series because I'm 6 feet tall and didn't want to hunch over the shorter 190 series. (Remember that the head also adds some height to the final camera height!) The legs release with latches, which is so much better than screws. The center column does feel a little light, but had no problem with my Canon XSi with kit lens. I've recommended this to my brother-in-law who has a Canon 40D with kit lens. He tried to mount his camera on a cheapo compact camera tripod and the motion blur in his photos was just awful. I don't anticipate any problems for him.
As some other reviewers have said, this tripod is heavy at 5+ pounds. Probably do-able for day hikes but may be too heavy for backpacking. However, getting below that weight usually means upgrading to carbon fiber, which is about 2.5 times as expensive. I feel that this tripod is definitely value for the money. The tripod is also pretty tall even in the collapsed position (and even taller if you leave your head attached). For me, it may need to go into checked luggage since I haven't figured out how to strap it to my Tamrac Adventure 9 backpack.
A real Pro tripod [Posted on 2008-10-17] What's not to like? I thought it would be good but the proof was getting it in the field. The legs extend flawlessly, it's very sturdy. I have the 488 RC4 Ball Head- It's a great combo. I do a lot of hiking in the Hocking Hills region of Southern Ohio, I just sling it over my shoulder and go. It's heavy but worth the effort. (I'm 61 so if I can handle it, who can't?
Exellent piece of work. [Posted on 2008-10-21] I knew I had to get a tripod if I wanted to take some lower light pictures, so at first I looked into getting a cheapie. I went to a local camera shop and they showed me this tripod and believe me, it is worth the extra hundred bucks. to think that I can take REALLY REALLY low angle shots with this thing is great for macro work. 10 cm from the ground is pretty low. It is very solid construction, a little on the heavy side, but once you carry it around and see the great shots you can get by using it, you wont even worry about lugging it with you. If you want to get a tripod once, and never have to get another one, this is a great idea. I am very happy with it.
055XPROB a Terrific Buy [Posted on 2008-11-03] After much deliberation, I chose to purchase the Manfrotto 055XPROB Pro Tripod Legs from Amazon, along with the Manfrotto 486RC2 Ball Head with RC2 Quick Release.
Pros:
- Super sturdy with nice thick leg construction and sturdy leg locks.
- Easy leg adjustment with 4 leg-angle settings
- Perfect height (for person 5'11") without even raising center column, which means a much sturdier shot
- The horizontal center column feature is much sturdier than I had anticipated, and provides for some amazing angles
- The independent legs, leg-angle settings and quick leg locks make for quick and easy setup on uneven terrain
Cons:
- Without paying over a G for a carbon fiber tripod... a sturdy tripod means a heavy tripod
- This tripod does not have spiked feet for loose terrain, but they are available extra for a price.
Summary:
This is a fantastic tripod. The 486RC2 Ball Head is a perfect addition. The ease of use and ability to customize for your shots is unparalleled. I am more than happy with my purchase!
