Great video light for the Canon HV30 [Posted on 2008-04-15] I stumbled on this camera while shopping for video lights to give the talent more facial detail and less shadow. It's a big light (about 2/3 the size of my Canon HV30) and quite heavy with the battery attached. The halogen light is very bright (and gets very warm!) compared to the other smaller on-camera video lights I researched, and it worked well at about 10 feet from the speaker. A downside is you need to buy a separate battery and charger. I'm using the Digicom BP-945 compatible battery and the recommended charger which I purchased together at Amazon for around $40. It has been money well spent. I am very pleased with this light, after having shopped for many weeks to find one that was bright and worth the money.
Works great [Posted on 2008-05-25] It's a bit brighter than I expected it to be, which is a good thing! Works well, seller shipped quickly. My favourite thing about this is that I use 2 Canon GL2's for my wedding shoots, with plenty of batteries, and the VL-10 uses the same batteries so it's very convenient.
Canon Video Light [Posted on 2008-06-15] This Canon light is very good for Weddings and other Family events.
It lights up all the dark areas and makes the subjects lighter.
Good basic light [Posted on 2008-08-12] Very pleased with the way this light helps in dark situations. It really helps highlight faces and works well when your subject is 4 - 8 feet away. Too close and it is too harsh on both your subject (squinting) and your footage (hot spots), too far and it doesn't illuminate the subject good enough.
Obviously a point source of light near the lens may leave undesirable shadows on the subject and their surroundings, so it won't make a really bad lit situation look great. It will, however, help you make faces and close-by objects look acceptable in poor lighting when a better lighting set-up isn't available and portability is essential.
It's a good light for its intended purpose. I may buy another for a second camera.
This thing can throw out that light! [Posted on 2008-09-28] I bought this light for my Canon GL2. This light is an awesome product. It works really well at night and can illuminate a wide area of darkness. When working with people - you want to make sure people are at least 4-5 feet away because of 2 things, 1) the light is very blinding and 2) it can cause some over-exposure of your subject. So if you can turn down the heat (adjust exposure levels while recording)then you should be fine. It works GREAT outside as well and can really light up the dark very well. GOOD BUY!
