A must for driving in Europe [Posted on 2008-12-31] Garmin nüvi 270 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Purchased this unit just days before leaving for France. The unit included maps of both North America and Europe and was attractively priced so I decided to take a chance as we were renting a car in Aix en Provence and planned to drive throughout Provence. Our first stop however was in Paris where we would rely on public transportation and walking. The unit was not much help walking, however this was not my primary reason for purchase. A map works fine for walking and it is far easier to stop and figure things out while walking.
We traveled from Paris to Aix en Provence on the TGV. I turned the Nuvi 270 on while on the train and it tracked our position without a problem. It was interesting to see our speed and where we were, it also reported that we reached a maximum speed of 192 MPH. The unit proved its worth in the Provence area. We never got lost and we could always find our way back to our hotel. It was well worth the price, we were able to travel in a foreign country and never be lost. This allowed us to enjoy what we were seeing instead of trying to find our next turn.
Defective Item [Posted on 2009-01-01] I bought this item off Amazon a couple of weeks ago. The first time I used it, it worked reasonably well, except the location I entered (somewhere in San Jose, CA) did not exist in its maps. This location was fairly new, and wasn't on Google or Yahoo! maps either, so I will forgive the Nuvi for this one problem.
The next day I switched it on to head to San Francisco, and it showed me maps, but would not let me enter a destination. It kept saying "No Data".
The third day I switched it on, it said "Acquiring Maps", and then said "No detailed maps available, the nuvi cannot operate without them".
I have been unable to use the Nuvi since then. This all happened within two weeks of receiving the item.
Pretty good GPS [Posted on 2009-01-01] I bought this GPS in November 2008, and I think its a good gps for long drives mostly on freeway, but not on streets...battery life is not good
but overall its good!
easy to start, easy to use [Posted on 2009-01-01] I live in Brazil and wanted to buy A GPS navigator that could be used both in the USA and in Europe. So far I did use it only in yhe USA and the experience has been a very good one. Since I will be using the product on rented/leased cars I bought also the portable dashbord support, that I fully approved too.
Resuming: very easy to install and excellent funcionality.
Garmin GPS makes great gift.a [Posted on 2009-01-02] I bought one for my son and one for my father-in-law for christmas. It has been very easy to use for both. I was worried about giving it to my father-in-law because he is not very good with high tech gadgets but he has been able to use it with no troble. The price is also a great value.
