We'd installed the software for this printer on some older XP machines. We'd constantly get the 'can't find network' popup even though our network is solid. So I installed it on my new Vista computer and same problem. Annoying but not a total deal breaker.
Then I started getting popups saying that smart web printing was having problems. Then every time I tried to navigate a web page the cursor would change and I would not have any control over my computer. So I tried uninstalling smart web printing. That deleted all of the icons on my desktop except for my recycle bin and also deleted all of my quick launch icons. So I did a system restore but that didn't help. Then I tried uninstalling the myriad of HP programs that auto-install (no general uninstall option given...thanks HP.) All but 2 uninstalled, the smart web printing and HP "solution" center. In short, I now do not have control over my brand new computer. HP does. This is criminal in my opinion as I did not authorize them to do this. I just wanted to install the software that I paid for.
Avoid this printer and avoid all HP printers and products. When you think of HP, think of Sony rootkits. It's about the same.

I was having problems connecting with my old HP printer, but I liked the photo printing quality. I first ordered the HP7460 from HP web site. They lost it when shipping Fed Ex. Then I ordered it from Amazon for $20 cheaper and fast delivery. I picked this model for the wireless capability and the viewing screen. I haven't been disappointed.

I bought this printer because it is good on ink.
I have had it for several months and still not refilled any of the inks.
I like the card reader option. I didn't like the speed of data transmission however when used in network or wireless mode and in fact went back to a USB connection for no reason other than speed.
I only wanted one printer for the 3 computers in the house. Going back to a USB hookup means the kids have to turn on my machine to use the printer, an acceptable compromise.
A larger paper holding tray would have been nice, I seem to be adding paper all the time. I like the seperate tray for photo paper, which is good as I print photos very rarely. (why would anyone print photos at home given the price of remote photo printing at chain stores???)
I had a HP many years ago and swore off another after the 400 dollar machine developed a paper handling problem. (820cse if I recall) I went to a Canon next which just up and died after a few years use. I am glad I went back to HP. Given the price I paid for this, if it lasts another year I'll be happy. I suspect it will last much longer.
The "fast draft" is so quick it spits the sheet out at you if you don't put the paper stop in place.
I do have a complaint other than the limited size of the paper tray. The software is good as far as printing options, but I have had to install, uninstall and reinstall it several times when switching from network to LAN and finally back to USB. In the process have created other problems. HP tries to do WAY TO MUCH for you with this software. Sometimes LESS IS MORE. HP needs to concentrate more on what is needed rather than trying to give you everything.
A solid buy, easy on ink, good price. Recommended!

I'm really enjoying this printer so far. I've only had it about a month. It's doing the things I am expecting it to accomplish. Bravo!
Printer failure within a year [Posted on 2008-12-31]
We've had our printer for less than (or just almost) a year. Setting it up to run wireless was ok, but like other reviews, the software kept dissapearing from the laptop. This problem may be solved with some new software - but out of the box, it doesn't like other hp printers on the same network.
Prints great and I didn't find that I was replacing ink all that much. I'm a pretty big user.
However, just all of a sudden, the cyan ink won't print so all colors are off. I've replaced it with another cartridge and no luck. I've gone through the limited service help menu that HP offers.
When calling HP they wanted $35 to help us solve the problem. I've never heard of that. If I was sure they would help - I may be willing to pay this just so my printer doesn't become landfill junk. But it seems just wrong to charge without some basic diagnostics first.
So looking at reviews - you've got two sets of customers. Those really satisfied or those really hating this unit. I expect the really satisfied customers just haven't had their printer break yet (like me).
I think I'm breaking away from HP for the first time in 10 years. Too bad I just bought $65 worth of ink! :(
