Reliability problems; also, not "smart" contrary to claim [Posted on 2007-09-29] I agree with the observations of "the engineer" elsewhere in these reviews. I too am an engineer, and I concur with his observations about the limitations of this Maha design.
As for my personal experience, the first unit I received died within 5 days. I received VERY cheerful and FAST replacement direct from Maha PowerEx no questions asked. However, the second unit died as well, after just a couple of months of not-so-heavy use.
I have given up on this charger. Despite what "editor's choice" might say, this charger isn't "the One".
Truth be told, finding a good charger that is smart, world-power friendly, and inexpensive seems to be nigh unto impossible. Someone let me know if they find one.
Great Charger [Posted on 2008-01-15] I have been using the PowerEx battery charger for the past year and a half with great results. This charger has performed without any issues to date.
While you do have to charge two (2) batteries at a time, and may not be a true 'smart' charger, I have not had any problems with charging. I started out with four (4) AA and four (4) AAA rechargable batteries. I rotate through the sets in pairs to keep a pair fully charge and in reserve.
I have just increased my count of batteries (in both sizes) to address the devices that require an odd number of batteries.
Good luck.
Hard to tell?? [Posted on 2008-06-04] Bought this charger based on ratings and comments on how well it charges NiMH to capacity and its conditioning cycle. It charges fine but I honestly haven't seen much difference in the flash recharge time on my camera (which is why I bought it in the first place). The one negative comment I have is that it only charges batteries in pairs... So when the battery on my MP3 player runs out, I need to waste a charge cycle on another battery to get the MP3 battery charged.
Great Battery Charger [Posted on 2008-07-07] This is a great battery charger. Highly recommend it. The reconditioning feature puts some new life in old batteries. Batteries will last longer than with most other chargers.
Best of Show [Posted on 2008-07-13] I use AA batteries specifically for my digital camera. It was most annoying to have a photo moment happen, and turn on my camera to see 'Replace Batteries' instead of what I wished to shoot. I did a lot of research and this combination received the highest reviews. My experience bears this out. The batteries hold charge for up to 4 times longer than my previous (Brand name and expensive) rechargeable batteries. The charger itself is compact and versatile, able to quick-charge only 2 batteries at a time, 4 at once, or to drain and recharge the batteries, which is recommended to extend battery life. Well worth paying a small premium for.
