Not as detailed as I had thought. A little more basic, would be good for a true beginner.

Typical Art book. Not really for beginner water color pencil artists at all. The book goes from: materials needed - 2 pages of applying colored pencil - 2 pages of blending and burnishing. The beginner is then whisked on to Chapter 2. Composition, fruits, flowers, jugs, the usual art book. Coloring a sphere or more basic tasks to build up confidence should have been the next step. I think if you are truly a beginner, using this book might not lead to a sense of accomplishment, which is then accompanied by a loss of energy and interest as is typical of some beginner books, which like this one is a portfolio of the author and her accomplishments.

Great technique for colored pencils [Posted on 2008-12-16]
I'm new to colored pencils, and was looking for a book to teach me. After going through several, I bought "Masterful Color." I am using the lessons as if I were in an art class. I am amazed at the results. The layering process is almost magical. You start the painting with complementary colors (eg. start a tomato with green.) I don't know how it works, but it sure does. The paintings are absolutely vibrant. The last lesson is to make your own masterpiece. I'm working forward to getting to that. I'm having so much fun painting with colored pencils. I've already been commissioned to do a painting.
A different approach, using color theory [Posted on 2008-12-31]
This book has the usual hallmarks of being good for beginners - advanced. It has the line drawings in back, it lists the pencils and colors used and has the photo progression from start to finish. It uses the new Prismacolor colors too. It uses color theory more heavily and shows a different approach for layering using the complementary colors which I happen to like. Either way, it's a fresh view of colored pencil technique.
