Not worth the weight unless you shoot sports or have big hands [Posted on 2008-06-19] It's solidly built. It shoots 8fps with the right batteries. It turns D300 into a rapid firing tool; well, it's truly faster...
It fits well with the camera, and it's that much heavier. Let's face it, if you shoot portraits mostly, the D300 with 6fps is more than enough. However, it will deliver, if you need the extra fps.
If you're going for it, my suggestion is getting a couple of sets of NiMH batteries with charger for less than $50, and you're up and running with this. There are claims of generic EN-EL4 and EN-EL4a not compatible with this, so be aware if you chose to go down that path.
ADDED 07/14 - After reading online about the batter grip helping with AF motor (more juice) for certain longer zoom lenses, I put this notion to the test and behold it's no BS. Having more juice to drive AF motor may be another reason to get the battery grip.
Excellent quality but... [Posted on 2008-06-22] The overall quality of the grip is exceptional. This is not a cheap plastic grip. It is rubberized, sturdy and sealed and comes with an insert for 8 AA batteries and a second insert for a EN-EL3 battery. The second dial works great. It's very comfortable (ergonomic)
The only flaw (and it's a big one if you ask me) is that the shutter button on the grip is way more sensitive than the one on the camera. Very annoying for this expensive product.
Excellent Accessory [Posted on 2008-06-28] If you were to get an accessory for your d300 this would be it. Feels great and solid in your hands. It helps the over all balance with a long lens. I've been using the AA Enelopes batteries and have taken about 1000 actuations.
Okay [Posted on 2008-07-28] The grip itsself is great, the battery life is pretty short though, Nikon needs a longer lasting batter that lasts at least 2+ hours.
Nikon MB-D10 [Posted on 2008-08-02] Since I had purchased this item I have put it to the test through a wedding, a weeks worth of shooting out of town, and some boring stuff and it has not let me down. I am very happy with it and have seen no negatives. 8 Double A batteries is the only downside but there is no getting around that!!
